Standing squat on the mat with a resistance band under the feet or around the thighs for hip alignment and glute engagement.

Setup instructions

Stand tall on the mat with feet hip-width apart. Option A: stand on the centre of a resistance band with one end in each hand at shoulder height. Option B: place a looped band just above the knees for outward pressure cueing. Engage the core and grow tall through the spine before descending.

Breathing cues

Exhale to squat. Inhale to hold. Exhale to stand.

Movement steps

  1. 1Inhale to prepare in standing.
  2. 2Exhale to bend the knees and hips, lowering into a controlled squat.
  3. 3Keep the knees tracking over the toes with band feedback engaged.
  4. 4Inhale to hold briefly at a comfortable depth.
  5. 5Exhale to press through the feet and return to standing.

Common mistakes

Letting the knees collapse inward; rounding the upper back excessively; leaning too far forward; using a band that is too strong; holding the breath.

Safety notes

Choose a squat depth that keeps the heels down and the trunk organised. Stop if knee pain or sharp hip discomfort appears.

FAQs

  • Is Resistance Band Squat suitable for beginners?

Yes. The band under the feet or around the thighs provides alignment feedback during the squat. Choose a depth that keeps the heels down.

  • What muscles does Resistance Band Squat work?

The quadriceps and glutes drive the squat while the deep core maintains trunk alignment against band feedback.

  • What is Resistance Band Squat good for?

It builds accessible lower-body strength and knee tracking before chair work, reformer footwork, and free-standing squats.
