Seated Arm Pull
BeginnerA beginner-friendly reformer strap exercise that builds upright posture, shoulder control, and gentle upper-back strength.
Setup instructions
Sit tall on the reformer carriage facing the pulleys. Hold one strap in each hand with the arms reaching forward. Keep the spine long, shoulders relaxed, and feet grounded or lightly supported. Choose a light spring setting so the movement feels controlled rather than forced.
Breathing cues
Inhale to prepare. Exhale as the arms pull back. Inhale as the arms return forward.
Movement steps
- 1Start with the arms reaching forward at shoulder height or slightly below.
- 2Inhale to prepare and lengthen through the crown of the head.
- 3Exhale as you gently pull the straps back, keeping the elbows soft and shoulders wide.
- 4Pause when the hands reach the sides of the body.
- 5Inhale to return the arms forward with control.
- 6Repeat without letting the spine collapse or the shoulders lift.
Common mistakes
Pulling with the neck instead of the upper back. Letting the ribs flare forward. Rounding the lower back while pulling the straps. Using too much spring resistance. Shrugging the shoulders towards the ears.
Safety notes
Keep the resistance light and the movement smooth. Stop if there is shoulder pain, neck tension, dizziness, or discomfort in the lower back.
