Setup instructions

Stand sideways to a studio wall with the feet hip-width apart. Place the hand closest to the wall on it at or above shoulder height. Step the inside foot slightly closer to the wall for stability. Soften the knees and grow tall through the spine.

Breathing cues

Exhale to lean. Inhale to hold. Exhale to return.

Movement steps

  1. 1Inhale to prepare in standing.
  2. 2Exhale to lean gently away from the wall, lengthening the side body.
  3. 3Keep the arm long without shrugging the shoulder toward the ear.
  4. 4Inhale to hold briefly at a comfortable stretch.
  5. 5Exhale to return upright and switch sides.

Common mistakes

Forcing the arm into painful overhead range; shrugging the shoulder; collapsing the standing side; holding the breath; rotating the trunk excessively.

Safety notes

Keep the stretch mild and steady. Stop if sharp shoulder pain, tingling, or dizziness appears.

FAQs

  • Is Wall Lat Stretch suitable for beginners?

Yes. The wall supports balance and the stretch can stay mild. Range should stop before shoulder pinching appears.

  • What muscles does Wall Lat Stretch work?

The lats and side body receive the primary stretch. The upper back and shoulder stabilisers help maintain comfortable arm alignment.

  • What is Wall Lat Stretch good for?

It builds accessible side-body and overhead flexibility before reformer lat work and strap-assisted stretching patterns.
