Setup instructions

Stand tall on the mat with feet hip-width apart. Stand on the centre of a resistance band with one end in each hand. Bring the hands to shoulder height with palms facing forward and light band tension. Engage the core gently and grow tall through the spine.

Breathing cues

Exhale to press. Inhale to hold. Exhale to lower.

Movement steps

  1. 1Inhale to prepare with the hands at shoulder height.
  2. 2Exhale to press the arms overhead against band tension.
  3. 3Keep the ribs from flaring and the shoulders relaxed away from the ears.
  4. 4Inhale to hold briefly at the top without locking the elbows aggressively.
  5. 5Exhale to lower the hands back to shoulder height with control.

Common mistakes

Arching the low back to reach overhead; shrugging the shoulders toward the ears; using excessive band tension; letting the elbows flare wide; holding the breath.

Safety notes

Choose a band that allows a smooth press without trunk sway. Stop if shoulder pinching or sharp neck discomfort appears.

FAQs

  • Is Resistance Band Overhead Press suitable for beginners?

Yes. Band tension is easy to scale by adjusting foot placement or hand position. Keep the press range where the trunk stays upright.

  • What muscles does Resistance Band Overhead Press work?

The shoulders drive the overhead press while the upper back and deep core maintain trunk organisation against band tension.

  • What is Resistance Band Overhead Press good for?

It builds accessible shoulder strength and upright posture before reformer arm work and mat arm series.

  • How is Resistance Band Overhead Press different from a wall-anchored press?

This version uses the feet to anchor the band on the mat, while wall-anchored presses use a studio wall for a fixed anchor point.
