BeginnerSaveSign in to save Resistance Band Side Bend

Side-bending pattern on the mat with a resistance band held overhead for lateral-chain resistance and trunk organisation.

Setup instructions

Sit or kneel tall on the mat with the spine long. Hold a resistance band overhead with both hands at shoulder width and light tension. Place the feet or knees hip-width apart for a stable base. Engage the core gently and soften the shoulders.

Breathing cues

Exhale to bend. Inhale to centre.

Movement steps

  1. 1Inhale to prepare in the upright position.
  2. 2Exhale to side bend toward one side against steady band tension.
  3. 3Keep both sit bones grounded and the chest open.
  4. 4Inhale to return to centre with control.
  5. 5Exhale to bend to the opposite side with even range.

Common mistakes

Collapsing the chest forward; letting the hips shift off centre; pulling the band so hard the shoulders hike; forcing painful lateral range; holding the breath.

Safety notes

Keep the side bend range modest and symmetrical. Stop if sharp side-body or shoulder discomfort appears.

FAQs

  • Is Resistance Band Side Bend suitable for beginners?

Yes. The overhead band provides gentle lateral resistance and the range can stay modest. Keep both sit bones grounded throughout.

  • What muscles does Resistance Band Side Bend work?

The obliques and lateral trunk stabilisers drive the side bend while the upper back maintains overhead band organisation.

  • What is Resistance Band Side Bend good for?

It builds lateral trunk control and side-body awareness before mat side bend and reformer mermaid progressions.
