Exercise

Coordination

Intermediate

Supine strap exercise that links arm pumping with controlled leg extension for core endurance and timing.

Setup instructions

Lie supine on the carriage with the headrest up and both feet in the straps. Hold one strap in each hand with the arms reaching toward the ceiling. Lift the head and shoulders into a comfortable curl and keep the pelvis neutral. Choose a spring setting that allows smooth arm and leg movement without jerking the carriage.

Breathing cues

Exhale during the extension phase. Inhale to return and switch sides.

Movement steps

  1. 1Start with the knees bent above the hips and the arms reaching up.
  2. 2Inhale to prepare, then exhale as one leg extends on a high diagonal while the opposite arm reaches back.
  3. 3Inhale to bend the knee and return the arm.
  4. 4Exhale to switch sides, keeping the trunk steady and the gaze forward.
  5. 5Repeat with small, controlled ranges before adding length or speed.

Common mistakes

Collapsing the chest; pulling the neck forward; letting the low back arch off the carriage; snapping the straps; using a range that makes the carriage bounce.

Safety notes

Keep the movement moderate and stop if there is neck strain, dizziness, or low-back discomfort. Reduce range or lower the head if needed.

FAQs

  • Is Coordination beginner-friendly?

Coordination is usually taught at an intermediate level because it combines lifted head and shoulders with coordinated arm and leg work. Beginners can prepare with Hundred Prep and simpler strap exercises first.

  • What muscles does Coordination work?

It mainly challenges the deep core muscles, hip flexors, and the upper body muscles that help stabilise the shoulders while the arms move with the straps.

  • What is Coordination good for?

It is useful for building core endurance, breath-linked timing, and controlled opposition between the arms and legs on the reformer.

  • What equipment do you need for Coordination?

You need a Pilates reformer with foot straps and hand straps. A moderate spring setting is usually best so the carriage stays smooth.
