Exercise
Advanced wall-supported handstand preparation for shoulder strength, alignment, and inverted body control.
Setup instructions
Begin in a plank position facing away from a studio wall with the feet placed on the wall at hip height. Place the hands shoulder-width apart on the floor with the arms extended. Walk the feet up the wall until the body approaches an inverted L or handstand angle. Press firmly through the hands and engage the core before holding.
Breathing cues
Breathe steadily throughout the hold.
Movement steps
- 1Inhale to prepare in the inverted position.
- 2Exhale to press the hands into the floor and lengthen through the shoulders.
- 3Hold with the heels lightly on the wall and the body in one organised line.
- 4Breathe steadily for several counts.
- 5Walk the feet down the wall with control to return to plank.
Common mistakes
Walking the feet too high before shoulder readiness; collapsing through the shoulders; holding the breath; dumping weight into the wrists; attempting before solid wall plank and pike prep.
Safety notes
Treat as an advanced progression. Master wall plank and wall pike first. Stop if wrist, shoulder, neck, or sharp back discomfort appears.
