Exercise
Advanced pike press variation using a studio wall for shoulder and deep core strength.
Setup instructions
Begin in a plank position facing away from a studio wall with the feet placed on the wall at hip height or slightly higher. Place the hands shoulder-width apart on the floor with the arms extended. Engage the core and walk the feet up only as high as shoulder control allows. Lift the hips toward the ceiling into a pike shape before pressing.
Breathing cues
Exhale to press. Inhale to hold. Exhale to return.
Movement steps
- 1Inhale to prepare in the pike position.
- 2Exhale to bend the elbows slightly and press the hands into the floor.
- 3Keep the legs straight and the head relaxed between the arms.
- 4Inhale to hold briefly with steady shoulder engagement.
- 5Exhale to extend the arms and lower the hips with control.
Common mistakes
Walking the feet too high and collapsing through the shoulders; bending the elbows beyond control; forcing the pike with momentum; holding the breath; attempting before wall pike and handstand prep are solid.
Safety notes
Treat as an advanced progression. Master wall pike and handstand prep first. Stop if wrist, shoulder, neck, or sharp back discomfort appears.
