Exercise
Supported split stretch using a studio wall to assist lower-body flexibility with controlled range.
Setup instructions
Stand facing a studio wall within easy reach. Place one foot on the wall at a comfortable height with the leg mostly straight. Step the standing foot back into a lunge with the hips square toward the wall. Rest the hands lightly on the wall at shoulder height for support.
Breathing cues
Exhale to deepen gently. Inhale to hold. Exhale to return.
Movement steps
- 1Inhale to grow tall through the spine.
- 2Exhale to slide the standing foot back gradually, deepening the split stretch.
- 3Keep the hips square and the back long without rounding.
- 4Inhale to hold at a comfortable range with steady breath.
- 5Exhale to return to standing with control and switch sides.
Common mistakes
Forcing the split depth too quickly; letting the hips rotate open; rounding the spine to chase range; locking the front knee; holding the breath.
Safety notes
Keep the stretch mild and progressive. Stop if sharp hip flexor, hamstring, or groin discomfort appears.

The hamstrings of the front leg and hip flexors of the back leg lengthen while the deep core maintains upright spinal organisation.
What is Wall Split Stretch good for?
It builds supported lower-body flexibility with wall stability before mat split stretches and reformer front splits.
