Resistance Band Lateral Walk

BeginnerSaveSign in to save Resistance Band Lateral Walk

Side-stepping walk on the mat with a resistance band around the ankles or thighs for glute medius activation and hip stability.

Setup instructions

Stand on the mat with feet hip-width apart in a comfortable partial squat. Place a looped resistance band around the ankles or just above the knees. Keep the chest lifted, core engaged, and knees tracking over the toes. Take a few steps in one direction to establish light band tension before reversing.

Breathing cues

Exhale to step. Inhale between steps.

Movement steps

  1. 1Inhale to prepare in the partial squat.
  2. 2Exhale to step one foot out to the side against band tension.
  3. 3Bring the trailing foot in without letting the band go slack.
  4. 4Continue stepping evenly in one direction for several reps.
  5. 5Reverse direction and repeat with the same controlled tempo.

Common mistakes

Standing too upright and losing glute engagement; letting the knees collapse inward; taking steps that are too wide for control; using a band that is too strong; holding the breath.

Safety notes

Choose a band strength that allows smooth side steps without knee pain. Stop if hip pinching or sharp lateral knee discomfort appears.

FAQs

  • Is Resistance Band Lateral Walk suitable for beginners?

Yes. The band around the ankles or thighs gives clear glute medius feedback during side steps. Keep the squat depth and step width modest at first.

  • What muscles does Resistance Band Lateral Walk work?

The glute medius and lateral hip stabilisers drive the side step while the hip flexors and deep core maintain pelvic alignment.

  • What is Resistance Band Lateral Walk good for?

It builds hip abductor strength and lateral stability before clamshell work, reformer side-lying series, and standing balance progressions.

  • How is Resistance Band Lateral Walk different from Resistance Band Monster Walk?

Lateral walk steps sideways against band tension, while monster walk steps forward at a slight diagonal angle.
