Supine leg openings on the mat with a resistance band around the ankles to mimic reformer feet-in-straps openings.

Setup instructions

Lie supine on the mat with both legs extended toward the ceiling. Loop a resistance band around the ankles with light tension. Rest the arms by the sides with palms down. Find a neutral pelvis with the low back gently supported on the mat.

Breathing cues

Exhale to open. Inhale to close.

Movement steps

  1. 1Inhale to prepare with the legs vertical and together.
  2. 2Exhale to open both legs apart against band tension to a comfortable range.
  3. 3Keep the pelvis level and the feet flexed.
  4. 4Inhale to close the legs back together with control.
  5. 5Repeat with smooth, even tempo.

Common mistakes

Opening the legs wider than hip control allows; letting the low back arch off the mat; using a band that is too strong; rushing the closing phase; holding the breath.

Safety notes

Keep the opening range modest until pelvic stability feels clear. Stop if groin pinching or sharp hip discomfort appears.

Yes. The band around the ankles guides the opening range and helps maintain control. Keep the legs vertical and the opening modest.

  • What muscles does Resistance Band Openings work?

The adductors and glutes control the opening and closing while the deep core maintains pelvic stability.

  • What is Resistance Band Openings good for?

It builds hip abduction control before reformer openings, frog press, and feet-in-straps progressions.
