Exercise
Standing mermaid side-body stretch at a studio wall for lateral flexibility and rib cage opening.
Setup instructions
Stand sideways to a studio wall with the feet hip-width apart. Place the hand closest to the wall on it at shoulder height for support. Reach the opposite arm overhead in a mermaid arc. Soften the knees and grow tall through the spine.
Breathing cues
Exhale to side bend. Inhale to hold. Exhale to return.
Movement steps
- 1Inhale to prepare in standing.
- 2Exhale to side bend gently toward the wall, lengthening the top side body.
- 3Keep the hips facing forward and the wall hand light.
- 4Inhale to hold briefly at a comfortable range.
- 5Exhale to return to centre and switch sides.
Common mistakes
Rotating the pelvis toward the wall; collapsing into the bottom side; forcing range with arm leverage; holding the breath; gripping the wall with full body weight.
Safety notes
