Exercise
Incline side plank variation with the forearm on a studio wall to reduce load and improve lateral core control.
Setup instructions
Stand sideways to a studio wall at arm's length. Place the forearm on the wall with the elbow directly under the shoulder. Step the feet back so the body forms a straight line from head to heels. Stack or stagger the feet for balance and engage the obliques.
Breathing cues
Breathe steadily throughout the hold.
Movement steps
- 1Inhale to prepare in the side plank position.
- 2Exhale to lift the hips away from the floor into a straight line.
- 3Hold with steady breath and level hips.
- 4Inhale to maintain the position.
- 5Exhale to lower with control and switch sides.
Common mistakes
Letting the hips sag toward the floor; collapsing the bottom shoulder; holding the breath; placing the elbow too far from the body; forcing a long hold before control is clear.
Safety notes
Start with short holds and build endurance gradually. Stop if shoulder pinching or sharp side-body discomfort appears.

FAQs
Is Wall Side Plank suitable for beginners?
Yes. The incline angle reduces load on the shoulder and obliques compared with floor side plank. Start with short holds.
What muscles does Wall Side Plank work?
The obliques and deep core stabilise the lateral trunk while the shoulder and upper arm support the body against the wall.
What is Wall Side Plank good for?
It builds lateral core stability with reduced load before floor side plank and reformer side-support patterns.
